Are There Foods that Speed Metabolism?

There is little doubt that out body processes different types of food differently and so it is not hard to believe that there are foods that speed metabolism. These are the types of foods that when eaten help the body burn the fat quickly to produce the energy needed to keep the body functioning normally. So, in essence these are great foods that help with weight control. Before we get to a list of foods considered effective in boosting metabolism it is worth understanding the process.

What is Metabolism?

In layman’s terms metabolism is the energy that the body needs to keep running and which it produces by burning calories already present in the body. Metabolism is not a constant and varies considerably dependent on size, shape, age and gender. Also, a person with more muscle than fat is likely to have a higher metabolism in that that person’s body will use up more calories for everyday functioning. All else being the same, a body with more muscle mass needs more calories to function than a body with a greater percentage of fat.  A high rate of metabolism is good because it allows the body to retain less fat. Those who do daily exercises are aspiring to increase the metabolism of their bodies.

How does food aid this process?

It is important to know that the body does not process all foods the same way. In some cases the transformation from food to energy is more instantaneous than in other where there is a slower release of the energy. Food types which instantly become energy that the body uses up are better in that they leave less fat in the body. Here are some suggestions to the diet for people who are looking for metabolism boosting foods:

Almonds - Almonds are full of good fats, incomplete protein and fiber. Nuts do have high calorie content but a judicious consumption of almonds offers the best of fatty acids and antioxidants. They pack a powerful punch in speeding up metabolism.

Apples – These fruits are said to be easily processed and they have a low glycemic index which makes them a good addition to any healthy diet.

Beans – Beans are high in protein and fiber. They help a person feel full and this is good in avoiding frequent snacks. Beans tend help people last longer between meals.

Berries – Berries are almost like nature’s wonderful gift in terms of how much they have to offer. The antioxidants alone make them a must have part of a healthy meal plan.

Cayenne pepper – This pepper which heats up the body is said to provoke metabolism because of this heating property. Apparently the human body uses up calories while cooling itself down and this makes cayenne a good addition for a high metabolism diet.

The list goes on and includes foods such as whey protein, rolled oats, spinach, natural yoghurt, green tea and whole grains. Meats such as salmon, turkey and chicken breast also are said to help speed up metabolism. A healthy mixture of these foods in every meal of the day from breakfast through dinner will give the body all the power it needs for a high rate of metabolism. The key is to vary the elements to ensure that the body gets a good balance of nutrients. While these foods do increase metabolism they are not meant to work miracles. The best bet for those looking to lose weight is to combine good and healthy eating habits with a well-thought out exercise regimen.
